About Our Teaching Artist Work Trade Program

Portside Arts Center is seeking qualified people to participate in our Teaching Artist Work Trade Program. Participants will be given the opportunity to assist one of our lead art teachers with our After School Arts Program. Once participants have fulfilled their required volunteer hours they will be awarded with the opportunity to attend one of Portside’s visual arts classes of their choice.

During this program participants will work alongside our lead art teachers and learn many valuable skills such as classroom management, lesson planning, mentoring, conflict resolution and more. At the end of the three months participants will be given the opportunity to create their own visual arts lesson and teach the class. Portside’s lead art teachers will help participants create and review their lesson as well as give constructive feed back. After the completion of the program participants will be given a certificate as well as a personalized recommendation letter to use for school and job applications.

Portside's After School Arts Program (ASAP) is a much needed after school program that provides high quality visual arts education as well as homework help for children in PrK through 5th grades. Portside’s ASAP runs from Monday - Friday 3:00-6:00pm. Portside’s shuttle bus picks the children up from six local elementary schools from our neighborhood every day.

Many of our local schools do not offer after school or visual arts programs. Each child enrolled in Portside’s ASAP for the full school year will receive approximately 360 hours of arts education and 120 hours of homework help. A child who participates on a month basis will receive an average of 30 hours of arts education and 10 hours of homework help each month.
