With stores like Wayfair and Amazon making it easier to buy furniture online, you might think that the need for upholstery work has dwindled. Surprisingly, the need for experienced upholsterers is on the rise. Upcycling and repurposing furniture has become very trendy. People often go to Pinterest to gain their next great DIY home project idea or watch HGTV’s, Flea Market Flip. But did you know that you could learn how to upholster your very own thrift store find right here in Fishtown?
That’s right since 2011 Portside Arts Center has been offering one of the only DIY upholstery classes in the tri-state area. Students get to bring their own unique chair or ottoman and learn how to reupholster it from start to finish. “Everyone who takes the class leaves with a chair that looks like it’s right out of a high-end magazine.” Executive Director, Kim Creighton explains. “We have had people come as far as from New York, Connecticut and the Pocono’s to take this class. We have found that there really isn’t any other class like ours out there.” During this class, you will learn how to strip down your furniture, rebuild the springs, and fix any light structural damage. It doesn't end there, you will also learn how to use an industrial sewing machine to do piping and cording as well as learn tufting and tacking methods. This class is instructed by Master Upholsterer, John Price, who has over 30 years of experience doing upholstery work in Philadelphia. Price has done upholstery work for local companies such as The Navy Yard as well as for hundreds of local Pennsylvania residents. Aside from refurbishing old furniture, he builds custom pieces from scratch. Price is a master at his craft and is here to help you renew, reuse and reupholster! Join Portside’s next 30-hour upholstery classes starting Saturday, April 6th and Tuesday, April 30th. They will also be hosting a one day workshop on Saturday, April 6th from 9am-12pm.
