![]() WOW! The Portside Arts Center celebrated their 6th Birthday Monday January 21st. We have really come along way since we first opened our doors in 2008, with over 40 visual, performing arts classes and a full music program, impacting over 1900 community members and schools. We are very proud to continue our Outreach Arts Initiative in our local schools, Senior Centers and other artist organizations and non-profit community centers. said Assistant Director, Jenna Wilchinsky. They wanted to give back to the community by hosting a Martin Luther King Jr. Service Day. They used their social networking skills to gather their community members, local businesses, Board Members and local Politicians such as John Taylor and David Oh, asking for their support in cleaning under the Belgrade Bridge, between Somerset Street and Lehigh Avenue in the Port Richmond area. This tunnel has been a very dangerous throughway and continues to separate the community due to the not safe feeling as soon as you enter the dark scary underpass. " We are calling this Phase 1: The clean up, and community interest and support in providing a safer, clean, well lit and beautiful passage. Phase 2: Repairs of walls in preparation of of a Mural, and Conrail permission. Phase 3: A beautiful Mural," said Kim Creighton, Director of the Portside. "We are very lucky to have the support of our NKCDC in lending us brooms and shovels, IronMan Metal for his constant donation of time and his truck, and our wonderful local businesses, Best Deli and Fresh Works for their donation of food for our volunteers. This community is so wonderful " All you have to do is ask" and they always come through with flying colors," said Creighton. Everyone worked so hard and swept every inch of the Belgrade tunnel, not leaving a scrap of trash behind. We thank everyone who came out to our MLK Service Day!
