Philadelphia Public School students will enjoy an extended summer vacation this year. When the 2018-2019 school year kicked off and left students and teachers sweltering in a late August heatwave, the Philadelphia School District made the decision to begin the 2019-2020 school year after Labor Day leaving Philadelphia children to enjoy a 12-week summer. With the majority of summer camps and Rec Centers already at capacity, the extra summer vacation days has left parents scrambling to find affordable, safe and fun options for summer childcare.
Portside Community Arts Center, located on the east-end of the Fishtown neighborhood, is offering more options for a magical and creative summer of fun with childcare and camps to fill the gap between last day of school, the first day of school, and other summer camps. "We added a new program to our schedule this summer to meet the demand and ensure our kids have a fun, unique way to spend their summer vacation”, said Kim Creighton, Founding Director. Portside’s Summer Camp Curriculum is focused on Empowering the Artists of Tomorrow. Portside kids are introduced to the work of local and international artists. Every week, campers will visit Philadelphia’s local arts and cultural hotspots like the Fabric Workshop Museum, Franklin Institute, Please Touch Museum and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Based on popular demand from existing students and parents, a new Summer Art Studio camp was added and offers hands-on multimedia art classes for budding young artists. Children will explore an exciting 2D or 3D art form each week. The themes include anime, comics, fashion, textiles, building, and sculpture. “They have an amazing program that really has helped my son thrive and find a place he feels a part of!”, shared Lisa O., Portside Parent. Portside is offering 9 weeks of camp starting June 10th. Parents can enroll for one week at a time. To accommodate parents busy work schedules, Portside camp and care hours are similar to a regular school day, 8:30 am - 3:30 pm and offer before care at 7:30am and aftercare until 5:30pm. Portside offers a special sibling enrollment discount and an affordable monthly payment plan. Portside Community Arts Center is a hidden gem on the east-end of the Fishtown neighborhood and serving families from Northern Liberties, Fishtown, Port Richmond, Kensington and Bridesburg. Since 2008, Portside Community Arts Center has been providing an affordable summer camp centered around visual arts, field trips and outdoor play. Portside offers a fun, safe and creative environment where kids are encouraged to express themselves freely and are celebrated for who they are.
