The purpose of this class is to gain a greater understanding of abstract painting and use this understanding to create meaningful and fulfilling work for oneself.  We will learn how to look at and interpret different types of abstract paintings and learn what the artist may be trying to communicate with his or her work.  We will use viewing other work and experimenting with different materials as a way to build our visual vocabulary and expand our toolbox with approaches to abstract painting.

Students will be responsible for bringing their own materials to class. The instructor will provide a detailed materials list upon registration.

This painting class focuses on the act of seeing as much as it does the act of painting.  We will focus on interpreting what we see and translating it into paint rather than trying to copy or replicate our subject matter.  We will feel our way through the paintings and focus on ideas of perception. A variety of subject matter will be used including portraits, still life and landscape.  Different artists will be presented for discussion in how they relate to perceptual painting techniques.  Traditional painting techniques as well as more contemporary approaches will be presented.  Materials and techniques will also be discussed, and we will see how the variation of materials can both change and enhance the outcome of each painting.

Students will be responsible for bringing their own materials to class. The instructor will provide a detailed materials list upon registration.
