Day of the Dead Celebration
at Cherry Street Pier

Friday October 30th 7:30pm-9:30pm
121 N. Columbus Blvd. Philadelphia PA 19106

We welcome our October Artist in Residence Cesar Viveros to Portside at Cherry Street Pier! Cesar is a renowned mural artist from Veracruz, Mexico who is based in Philadelphia. Cesar's 'personal' art work is more like a glimpse into the Mexican ancient world on contemporary public settings for people from different venues interested in syncretism studies. Whether they are Mexican immigrants reaching out to reconnect with their cultural origins and for their vanishing cultural heritage, Hispanic people curious about typical Mexican ancient celebrations that may differ from other countries, or the general public interested in celebrations that define Mexican culture, they can experience it throughout Cesare's diverse artwork. The incorporation of Aztec Dance and ceremonies, large scale as well as miniature altars for Day of the Dead, monumental sculptures, Fresco painting, and mosaic and feather work are examples of some of his signature work outside of painting murals.

During the month of October, Cesar will be working on an installation for Day of the Dead, including a larger than life sculpture of “MICTLANTECUTLI," the Lord of the Mexican underworld to be the central piece. The installation will also include a traditional Mexican altar and a mural created by Cesar with help from members of the community. The installation will be on display at the celebration on Friday, October 30th at Cherry Street Pier. Viewers partaking in the event can also expect a lively performance by Aztec dance group Kalpulli Kamaxtle Xiuhcoatl, a visit from local artist Rita Ruiz dressed as “La Catrina” (a character representative Dios de Los Muertos), some traditional Mexican treats, as well as a speech from the Mexican Consulate of Philadelphia. We will have craft activities available for kids, so all ages are welcome to celebrate!

*Visitors will be required to wear masks unless they are eating or drinking.
