Portside is proud to offer one of the only upholstery classes in the tri-state area at an affordable price, and our classes have attracted individuals from surrounding areas including Chester County, New Jersey, and New York. Vilma Tirado, a commited and passionate student who attends our Tuesday class, commutes all the way from the Bronx in New York City!

Vilma was in search of an upholstery class in New York City, but had no luck finding one. She then found out about the upholstery program at Portside and wondered if it would be worth the effort of commuting weekly to Philadelphia. Ultimately, Vilma decided to follow her intuition and to go for it. She was right in following her intuition, because she loved the class - so much that she's now back for her second session and working on her fourth chair!

Vilma commutes to Philadelphia via Megabus, a two hour long trip that drops her off in Center City. She has embraced the opportunity as a way to escape the hustle and bustle of New York City, and enjoys exploring Philadelphia when she has the spare time.

"Every week I look forward to coming to Philly, and it’s so satisfying to bring my completed projects home. I don’t think I’ll be stopping any time soon as I continue personalizing each piece of furniture I own. I highly recommend this class to everyone!"

Since Vilma has already taken the Beginner Upholstery Class, she is now attending our Open Studio. Open Studio runs simultaneously with the Beginner Class and is meant for returning students who can work independently but will still have access to all of our tools, as well as the ability to get one on one help from instructor and upholstery expert John Price if they need it. Most of our upholstery students return for Open Studio, and continue to take multiple sessions! The class not only provides students with the skills and knowledge of this special craft, but also has become a social gathering where fellow students become good friends.

Our Tuesday and Saturday Upholstery Classes have been getting a lot of enrollment, and due to popular demand, we are opening up a Wednesday night class, open to beginner and returning students. To learn more about the program and to enroll, click the link below!
