In keeping with their mission of Empowering the Artists of Tomorrow, Portside Arts Center offers students an opportunity to broaden their world through visual arts programming that includes meeting influential local artists and experiencing the impact of art in the community.
On Tuesday, April 23, 2019, Portside Arts Center’s young artists will visit world renowned artist, Ray King’s studio, located in the Northern Liberties neighborhood of Philadelphia. Since 2010, Ray King has donated glass materials to the Center as well as given lectures and hosted studio tours for Portside’s young artists who attend the Arts Center’s After School Art Program and Summer Art Camp. Last spring, Portside’s 2nd - 5th grade students visited King’s studio and learned about the site-specific art installation he is creating for SEPTA’s 15th Street Station. SEPTA selected King’s project proposal that is designed to add color and light to the commuter experience. He created 28 illuminated, laminated chromatic glass and stainless-steel reflector panels to install in the central columns of the 15th Street Station platform. The design is inspired by the City of Philadelphia’s geometric physical layout and its green space squares of Washington, Rittenhouse, Logan and Franklin. During their visit last spring, Portside’s students witnessed the beginning stages of the project. King talked with them about his creative process and inspirations. During Portside’s next visit, on April 23, students will see the artwork near completion, and learn about King’s plans for installation. “We are so thrilled to offer our students an opportunity to meet with such a talented and influential local artist,” said Kim Creighton, Founding Director of Portside Arts Center. Portside Arts Center places high value on their students engaging with local and international working artists, businesses and often incorporates visiting artists into their core youth programs year-round. King loves talking to the young students about his work and the importance of following your passion. King values working with Portside’s young artists and showing them first-hand how technology, history, ancient cultures, and mathematics can be incorporated when creating large scale works of art. Currently, Portside’s 3rd - 5th-grade students in the After School Art Program are designing their own “nonuments”, temporary monuments not dedicated to any specific person, place, or event. Using paper mache and found objects, each student intends to create a unique sculpture. The students will choose how and where their work will be displayed at Penn Treaty Park. They will then have a class critique on how each sculptor affects their chosen environment. “The students are looking forward to visiting Ray King’s studio and are excited to share their ideas for their public works of art with King,” said Jesa Minnick, Portside Art Center Teaching Artist.
